Would it be rude of me to ask my neighbors to stop doing their home improvement project tonight?
Greta asked:
I live in a duplex and the people on the other side are in the middle of some major home improvement escapade.

I live in a duplex and the people on the other side are in the middle of some major home improvement escapade.
They’re hammering and sawing and apparently ripping the floor up. They’ve been doing this ALL day and they aren’t showing any signs of stopping…in fact, their friends just came over to help.
I don’t wanna be rude, but I have to get up at 6 AM and I kinda need to sleep. Would it be really rude of me to go over and ask them to stop?

No it wouldn’t be rude. It’s rude of them not to stop at a reasonable hour.

Most cities have ordinances about the latest you can do construction - usually 8 pm. If you nicely request they stop by 10 pm, that’s not unreasonable in the least.

I don’t know about doing it tonight, but you will want to find out from your city/town what the noise ordinances are regarding night time. With this knowledge, I would kindly ask them to suspend renovations at that time due to your early morning requirements. If they give you flack, then give them the info regarding the ordinance.

No it wouldn’t be rude to ask them to stop. Explain to them that you understand that they are doing the home improvement work but that you also need to get some rest as you have to be up for 6am. Hopefully they’ll understand and won’t cause a scene. Also make sure you talk to them about a certain time to stop doing the home repairs, just to make it fair for you and any other neighbours who also might be disturbed by the noise. If this doesn’t work, call your landlord or city by-law officials regarding noise complaints. Good luck.

Ask them nicely and if they don’t stop call the police and ask what time your city ordinance demands they stop. I am sure they are not trying to be rude but they just are not thinking. Good Night, I hope

The unwritten rule is no noise after 10pm, and before 10am
if they go past ten, politely ask them to cease, as you have to get up in the morning…..

I don;t know about by you, but around here there’s a law saying yo u can’;t do construction work after i think its 8:30 or before 6:30 am so you don’t disturb people. so you should look online and find out about your area and then go and ask them; even if you can’t. Also if they don;t stop, call the police (not by 911, by the police dept. number) and report a disturbance. Our neighbors call the police like once a week on the people across the street who’s dog barks incessantly.

I so feel for you, my next door neighbour recently did the same getting ready for a long weekend all day hammering and sawing till 1am
I let him do it thinking..”its a special occasion”.
Since then every weekend he and his loud friends are up and out back till 2am, I can’t leave the window open and I wish I’d had the balls to go see him on the first weekend.
Be sweet, act tired, good luck!
Mal.

No i don’t think it’s rude at all. They shouldn’t be doing that late in the 1st place.
April 18th, 2009 at 6:20 am
NO. IT’S NOT RUDE.
They are disturbing your nightime.
Tell them you need to get up at 6am, and “could you please stop hammering for tonight, I have to get up early, I need to sleep, excuse me”. Ask them politely.

City bylaw around here is 7am to 9pm for loud equipment, but that probably doesn’t cover home renovations unless there is a contractor doing them.
Your best bet is the polite request and explanation of your wake-up time.

greta, i think if you explain to your neighbors exactly what
you said on ya that they will understand and i feel it would
not be rude. good luck.

Normally they should finish by 8 pm.. and then resume their work the next day.. Yes you can ask them in a friendly way.. that you understand they want to get their apartment nice.. but if they still hammer at 10 pm.. that is rude.. I would not tell them that it’s rude but I would say.. that you have to be up at 6 AM and would like some undisturbed sleep.. if you go to bed at 10 pm then you get your 8 hrs of sleep.. it’s the same with music.. they can turn it up more but at 10 pm it has to be at room noise level… so I would talk to them.. maybe they are so enthusiastic about what they are doing they don’t know the time… xxx

It’s not rude of you to ask them in a nice way to stop at a reasonable hour (9 or 10pm), especially during the week when alot of people have to get up early and go to work. I hope you took everyone’s advice on here.

Hi,
No it would not be rude of you.
Do the following;
Go visit your neighbors, take with you a small gift, like something to drink of to eat. So do it in person, not over the phone. When you are at their doorstep say hello and that you want so see what they are doing and that you are curious what all that noise and breaking out of things looks like and what kind of improvement it will be.
When they have explained to you what they are doing, them tell then that they are working late and that you have problems to get to sleep.
Ask them if it would be possible to stop are some earlier time so that you can get some sleep, because you have to get up early in the morning. I am sure you come to some kind of arrangement suitable for both parties. Tell them you want to see the result of all their hard work when they are done.

i would just go over to them and say this
” hey it looks like you have a lot of work how much longer til you are done”
April 28th, 2009 at 7:52 am
nope it won’t be so rude .just ask them politely 2 stop their work at that time of the day
April 29th, 2009 at 2:02 am
Ask them nicely, they may not realize that they are bothering anyone. When i was doing some work in my house i had no idea how much the noise carried through to the other side, until they did some work. Now I limit my projects, at least the noisy ones to between nine am and eight pm.
April 30th, 2009 at 10:23 am
um just explain to them really nicely that becuz of they’re hammering and loud noises they’re waking you up so just say really gently
May 1st, 2009 at 12:10 am
Well I think that it’s perfectly ok if you ask them politely and explain your situation! They can always start in the morning! It wouldn’t br rude at all. Good Luck!
May 2nd, 2009 at 6:13 am
You should ask them to please turn in early so you can get your sleep if they absolutely HAVE to do it then maybe try some ear plugs. No worries if they are good neighbors or maybe if you even bring them something maybe they will stop just for you. Good Luck!
May 4th, 2009 at 8:59 am
No of course not. U have a perfectly good reason, and just be polite about telling them. tell them ur living situation and tell them u really need sleep at nite.
if they don’t stop then, they r the rude people.
hope this helps and good luck
May 6th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Not really just be nice about it.
Say to them, your house will be better when your done, but can you please stop for tonight, because i really need my sleep.I’m not trying to be rude I just need my sleep please.
May 9th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
Yes it would be rude 2 do dat, because it makes them think u r jealous. Unless it bothers u than tell the them that you can’t sleep at night, than u can tell them that yes it is bothering me.
May 12th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Hell No Its called the right to shut the **** up im trying to sleep
May 14th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
They may feel it to be rude but the city will have a time when noise must stop, I workt 2nd shift and **** the 7 am lawn mowers. On the other hand I renovated 3 homes and we had to work late hours too. If you know them and value the frienship buy earplugs.
Rest in peace
