Im going to paint the exterior of my house around the door?

Mike asked:

the are i am painting is around the door. its made of wood and the paint is cracking and peeling. but i don’t know much about painting so please help me out here. i know i have to scrap it to get the old paint off. then i figured i would wash it. let it dry a couple of days, put some primer on (although i’m not sure how much or what that means, only that its something i have to put on). then put some paint on. if anyone has an idea of how much it cost i would be grateful also.

as you can see. I don’t know much about painting, so please help me out. I’m not stupid, just uneducated in the art of most home improvement, but i would like it be. (i didn’t grow up with “do it yourself” parents) I’m a college student and cant afford to hire someone. anyways please help me out! thanks a lot.

    you are right on dude,
scrape the old paint and wash it with tri sodium phosphate(TSP) or a bleach solution ( 1 bleach and 2 water)( old clothes and safety glasses)
if there are large cracks or holes, you need to caulk,,shoot it in the ***** and wipe with your finger and wet rag(careful splinters)
next is the primer and basically you only need to prime the bare wood,,kilz is a good one ( if you get oil base get a throwaway brush, it will be cheaper than cleaner) and you can paint the same day, depending on the results you want , 2 light coats of paint are better than one
I use sherwin williams a-100 but lots of good paint out there
have fun and think about this while you are painting ,some people do this for a living( lucky dogs)

2 start i love this question b/c I’m a “budget”designer 4 builder, and u honestly don’t have 2 do all of the above I’ll get 2 the point short simple & cost effective, start by sanding(with a sanding pad 3$)wipe down with bleach 2 get all mildew out & refresh the wood so it doesn’t get any mildew than dry with a rag, here’s the kicker buy a small pint of paint/with a built in primer and sealer(it will say exterior paint and color but look 4 one with a primer and sealer)I use Vasper fromm Lowes love it one coat , or u can do it the expensive way &do all the steps clean, sand, prime, paint and seal.the paint i listed above is around 8$ total grand total project around 11$ & a little sweat good luck..

Scrape it to get all that is loose off. It will peel off if you don’t. The new paint will just flake off with the old. Wash with T.S.P. it is a detergent that won’t leave a residue. I like Zinser bulls eye primer 123. It is water based so it cleans up with soap and water. Water based Kilz is not bad and is cheaper. When you paint over chips it will show. You can sand to reduce the flaw, but it is normal to have imperfections with age. Coronado makes a water based paint that will adhere to old oil paint. Oil over oil or latex. Latex only over latex. If you get a nice brush and clean it it will last and is worth the price $15, Primer $ 16, T.S.P. $ 3.50, Paint $ 30 this is for gallons. You should have product left over to use on your next project. 1 Quart is half the price of a gallon but only a quarter the product. Hope this was helpful.
