What Sitcoms Can Teach You About Marketing
I am not a big Tv guy but my girlfriend got me hooked on a couple of shows. One of them is Brother and Sisters. It is a show about a family that is in politics and it shows how they love and hate each other at times. They have a large family and so the drama, and yes there is lots of drama, usually goes on at the dinner table or a party.
The writers of the show are brilliant. They keep you interested in the story or I should say multitude of stories throughout the show.
That is something that most business professionals lack in their marketing. Most marketing is boring and it really only seves the ego of the person writing it, usually the owner of the company.
People want to be entertained. That is why their are shows such as Brother and Sisters as well as Grey’s Anatomy. People want them.
One way you can create interest is to start letting your customers know about your personal life. I am not talking about the extra personal stuff. I am talking about stuff like if you and your son went to Boy Scout camp last week or maybe you guys have a new family pet.
You would think nobody cares about that stuff but I can promise you they do. Why do you think People magazine sells so many copies each week? People love stories of other people.
In closing, if you are guilty of being boring in your marketing, make a commitment to yourself that you will be yourself more and start sharing information that your customers think is interesting. Your bank account will thank you for it.
